Accessibility

Everyone belongs
at the table

How I make this site work for every player, and how to reach me if something doesn't

My promise

A site every player can use

I want everyone who loves Mahjong, or wants to learn it, to be able to use this site. That includes players who use a screen reader, get around with a keyboard instead of a mouse, zoom in to read, or see colors differently.

As a special education teacher, making learning work for every student is close to my heart, and a website is no different. My goal is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the standard most widely used for accessible websites.

What's in place

Built so more people can play

  • Text and buttons have enough contrast to read comfortably, and pages still work when you zoom way in or play on a phone.
  • Every page works with a keyboard, and a "Skip to content" link at the top takes you straight past the menus.
  • The paintings and pictures have text descriptions, and purely decorative art is hidden from screen readers so it doesn't get in the way.
  • The Practice Table and the Game Table can be played with a keyboard or a screen reader. Each tile is named out loud, and the Game Table announces every new turn and keeps your place as the game moves along.
  • Hands from the card show suits with color like the printed card, plus a small underline mark on red and blue groups, so you can tell suits apart without relying on color. Screen readers read each hand aloud with its suit colors.
  • The Game Table has a full screen option that makes the tiles bigger and hides everything but the game.

Still in progress

What I'm still working on

  • Moving tiles around your rack by dragging needs a mouse or touch screen. With a keyboard, the "Sort them for me" button puts your tiles in order instead.
  • Tile names are read aloud in English, like "6 Crak" or "Red Dragon." The Chinese characters printed on some tiles aren't read out.
  • I'm working on making my printable PDF guides easier to use with screen readers. If a printable is hard for you to use, email me and I'll get you the information in a way that works for you.
  • Some links take you to Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers, and Amazon. Those sites have their own accessibility, which I can't control, but I'm happy to help you find or buy anything of mine another way.
